Needle Length

Optimising effectiveness

'There is no medical reason to recommend pen needles longer than 5mm for children and adults.'¹

Skin thickness for adults ranges from 2mm - 2.5mm across common injection sites, regardless of BMI. Long needles increase the risk of injecting into the muscle which can cause pain and improper absorbtion of medication.2,3

According to the Australian Diabetes Educators Association (ADEA) Clinical Guiding Principles for Subcutaneous Injection Technique, therapy should commence with short (4mm - 5mm) pen needle lengths.¹ Short needle lengths help reduce injection discomfort whilst ensuring effective delivery.¹

1

Why short 4mm or 5mm pen needles?

  • Ensures medication is delivered into the subcutaneous layer.¹
  • To substantially reduce the risk of intramuscular injection compared to 6mm and 8mm pen needle lengths.3, †
  • Suitable for all, including children, adults and obese patients.¹
